Once dominated by white buttercreams and fondants, the color palette for wedding cake icing has become a kaleidoscope of vibrant shades in any hue you can imagine. As we head into fall and winter, bold colours are taking over the wedding cake scene.

As cooler fall weather rushes in, couples are getting away from bright whites and romantic pastels and welcoming bold colors in almost every element of their décor, including the cake.

“This year, for fall and winter weddings, we’re seeing more and more couples choose bold colors for their cakes,” said Heather Hammer, Pastry Chef, Cookie Patisserie & Bakery. “We’re also seeing lots of design that incorporate sparkly elements. These vibrant colors and designs make a dramatic statement at any wedding.”

Fresh Shades for Fall and Winter

Inspired by the florals and foliage of the season, autumn weddings are the perfect time to introduce rich reds and oranges like burgundy and copper. A metallic ombré design in a copper hue embraces all the latest trends while giving your cake an authentic fall feeling.

Rich, earthy shades of evergreen or jewel tones of purple, pink and blue will also complement the season. Winter cakes iced in white come alive with black, red and icy blue icing accents and adornments.

Florals

Adding seasonal florals, either sugar or fresh, is another great way to add color and seasonal flare to your wedding cake. Edible fall foliage and succulents are all the rage.

In winter, rich red accents create an eye-catching design. Try red roses or sugar-dusted cranberries. Deep, earthy greens adorning a crisp white cake is fitting for a woodland themed wedding. You could even wrap fresh wreaths of greens and berries around each tier. Stand your cake on a wooden pedestal for a rustic twist.

Luxe Accents

Glitter, gilding and gold leaf accents will add another dimension to your cake and elevate the elegance. From rich golds to cool silvers, the shimmering metallic shades are ideal for winter weddings. Sparkling designs can stand alone or be combined with delicate icing techniques such as ruffling or a torn paper look.

A Decadent Drip

Drip cakes have been trending all year, as vibrant shades delicately cascaded down tiered cakes for a pretty and playful look. For fall and winter, swap fresh summer colors for chocolate and caramel drips. The warm, decadent hues and flavors will be enticingly delicious.
