It’s often brides whose ensembles get all the attention on a couple’s wedding day, but this year’s trends for grooms’ formalwear may just steal the show. With tailored suits and patterned details, in 2019 grooms and groomsmen are dressing to coordinate with their brides and bridesmaids without outright matching.

The foundation for a groom’s ensemble will be a classic, tailored three-piece suit this year. Add a hint of personality with a patterned waistcoat that contrasts with the suit jacket. The three-piece suit also allows for grooms and groomsmen to shed a layer during the reception without losing their polished look.

Black and navy blue suits will remain popular, as always. Some grooms are embracing these colors wholeheartedly with a stark black and white look, much like Prince Harry at his wedding reception last year. Another trend stemming from the royal wedding is the double-breasted waistcoat, as worn by one of men’s fashion’s favorite Brits: David Beckham.

This year, men will opt for bold colors and softer neutrals in addition to classic black and blues. Weddings in 2019 will see jackets and full suits in true blue, burgundy, charcoal and tweed, as well as light grey and beige. No matter the color, both pants and jackets will be slim-fit.

In addition to patterned waistcoats, grooms and their groomsmen will be adding punches of color and whimsy with fun socks and patterned ties. What were, just last year, a way to completely match the bridesmaids are now part of the groom’s self-expression. Paisley and floral patterns are perfect for spring and summer weddings, while fall and winter celebrations call for tartan, plaid or check ties.
